The Netherlands Secretary General of Defence Mr Wim Geerts and the Chief of Defence General Tom Middendorp visited NATO's Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) on Friday 31 March 2017 in order to observe the second iteration for Exercise TRIDENT JAGUAR 2017 (TRJR17) and also to meet with the Centre's leadership.
Directed by Polish Army Major General Andrzej Reudowicz, Commander JWC, the Non-Article 5 Command Post Exercise (CPX) will train, evaluate and certify 1 (German/Netherlands) Corps (1GNC) in a Joint Task Force (JTF) Headquarters role to plan and conduct a Land-heavy Small Joint Crisis Response Operation. Based on the fictitious Skolkan training scenario, the exercise focuses on conventional and asymmetric (hybrid) threats, logistic support during crisis response operations, maritime security and air support, cyber, chemical, biologicial and radiological threats, Strategic Communications, medical activities, humanitarian civic assistance and the Comprehensive Approach.
1GNC is commanded by the Netherlands Army Lieutenant General Michiel van der Laan.
On the road to certification as a JTF HQ, 1GNC conducted exercises TRUTHFUL SWORD and ULTIMATE SWORD, respectively last year where 1GNC used, for the first time, the Land Command and Control Information System (LC2IS) as well as TOPFAS (Tools for Operational Planning Functional Area Service) and gained experience in the modus operandi of both Maritime, Air and Special Operations Component Commands in a joint environment in order to enhance units’ flexibility and interoperability.
TRJR17 is in fact two exercises back-to-back, with the first iteration finished on 16 March, certifying the Rapid Reation Corps France (RRC FR) as a JTF HQ for the 2017-2018 standby period.
Along with 1GNC units --- 11 (NLD) Air Manoeuvre Brigade, 37 (DEU) Mechanized Infantry Brigade, (41) DEU Mechanized Infantry Brigade, 4 (CZE) Rapid Deployment Brigade, and the Joint Logistic Support Group (JLSG) provided by the Netherlands Operational Support Command (Land) --- AIRCOM and STRIKFORNATO are also participating in the exercise as the Maritime and Air Component Commands, respectively. Additionally, Lithuanian Special Operations Force (SOF), supported by the Netherlands SOF, participate in the exercise as the Special Operations Component Command.
