Rear Admiral James A. "Jim" Kirk
Deputy Commander/Chief of Staff Joint Warfare Centre
Rear Admiral James A. Kirk was born in Bethesda, Maryland and raised in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and received his commission in 1990. He has since served in a variety of afloat and ashore billets as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy.
Rear Admiral Kirk has served afloat on destroyers, cruisers, frigates and staffs including USS Fife (DD 991); USS The Sullivans (DDG 68); USS Hué City (CG 66); USS John S. McCain (DDG 56); Gas Turbine Inspector on the staff of Commander, Pacific Fleet, and Operations Officer for Carrier Strike Group Seven/Ronald Reagan Strike Group.
Rear Admiral Kirk has commanded both USS De Wert (FFG 45) (2008-2009), and USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) (2013-2016), respectively.
Ashore, Rear Admiral Kirk has served as Executive Assistant to the Navy’s Chief of Legislative Affairs; Action Officer on the Joint Staff J8, and Executive Assistant to the Director of Surface Warfare (OPNAV N96).
In 2017, Rear Admiral Kirk was assigned as Deputy for Weapons and Sensors to the Director of Surface Warfare (OPNAV N96).
He has also attended both the U.S. Naval War College in 2001-2002 and U.S. Army War College in 2011-2012, graduating with Masters Degrees in National Security Studies.
Rear Admiral Kirk became the Joint Warfare Centre’s Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff on 22 May 2018. His awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and various other personal, unit and service awards.
He and his wife, Sherry, have been married for 25 years, and they have three children. Rear Admiral Kirk’s interests include American football, spending time with family, and reading.
