STAVANGER, Norway – The Main Events List/Main Incidents List (MEL/MIL) Scripting Workshop for NATO Exercise TRIDENT JUPITER 2019-2 (TRJU19-2) took place from Jan. 20 to 31, 2020 at the Joint Warfare Centre’s (JWC) training facility in Stavanger, Norway.

The Scripting Workshop was conducted immediately after the Incident Development Workshop which started on Jan. 13.

As the second iteration of NATO’s “TRIDENT JUPITER 2019 Exercise Campaign”, TRJU19-2 is linked to last year’s exercise, TRIDENT JUPITER 2019-1 (TRJU19-1), and the upcoming, one-level (tactical/land-centric) exercise LOYAL LEDA.

The aim of the workshop was to create a realistic and cohesive script to challenge the Training Audiences during the execution phase of TRJU19-2 and set and finalize the simulation database in accordance with the exercise scenario, which is designed by the JWC. Together, the two workshops involved nearly 360 external participants, including key trusted agents from across the TRJU19-2 Training Audiences, Allied and Partner Nations, representatives from NATO Centres of Excellence, non-governmental and international organizations, as well as over 40 subject matter experts, exercise planners and scenario developers from the JWC.

Script offers the challenges the Training Audience requires throughout the spectrum of specialisations and tiers of command

Royal Air Force Regiment Wing Commander John Rees, the JWC Chief Content for TRJU19-2, said: "I am extremely impressed with the work produced by the team over the past three weeks. The quality of the script they have produced offers the challenges that the Training Audience requires throughout the spectrum of specialisations and tiers of command. Particularly noteworthy is the skill the Event Managers bring to the forum in ensuring the relevance and coherency of the product."

TRJU19-2 is scheduled to be executed in early spring.

The upcoming exercise will be one of the largest and most complex NATO Command Post Exercises (CPX) to date, based upon a fictitious Article 5 scenario beyond the Major Joint Operations level. It will train, evaluate and certify Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum) as a Joint Task Force Headquarters to meet NATO’s current and future operational needs.

The TRJU19-2 MEL/MIL is based on the JFC Brunssum’s Training Objectives. The MEL/MIL provides the core exercise content, which is to be played during the execution phase.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Maroon, the JWC Deputy Chief Content for the exercise, said: "Due to the compressed schedule for the TRIDENT JUPITER Exercise Campaign, we produced over 2,000 injects and developed the associated content in just three weeks while ensuring all Training Objectives were represented within a synchronized exercise design."

Maroon added: "TRIDENT JUPITER 19-2 is a unique exercise. It presents an opportunity for Joint Force Command Brunssum to put their joint plans into action in a highly contested environment and deliver coordinated effects against threats across a vast Joint Operations Area in order to ensure NATO’s territorial integrity."

TRJU19-2 aims to challenge the NATO Command Structure, namely, JFC Brunssum – the primary Training Audience of the exercise and the lead headquarters for the NATO Response Force (NRF) in 2020 – in order to test and strengthen the collective defence of the Alliance.

The exercise Training Audience also includes Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Allied Land Command (LANDCOM), Allied Air Command (AIRCOM), Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM), the Polish Special Operations Component Command and the Joint Logistic Support Group.

Like its predecessor, TRJU19-2 will be directed by Rear Admiral Jan C. Kaack, Commander JWC.
