STAVANGER, Norway – U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Erik M. Ross, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group Two and U.S. Marine Corps Major General Stephen M. Neary, Commanding General, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade visited NATO Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) on September 4 and 5, 2019 in preparation for Exercise TRIDENT JUPITER 2019-1 (TRJU19-1).

The visitors and their accompanying liaisons were greeted by German Navy Rear Admiral Jan C. Kaack, Commander JWC, and U.S. Navy Rear Admiral James A. Kirk, the Centre’s Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff, on Wednesday, September 4. The programme continued into the next day and included detailed briefings on topics ranging from JWC’s exercise design and delivery processes to the 360-degree scope training scenario design and development, the Opposing Forces (OPFOR), media simulation and the exercise information environment.

Ross and Neary were also given a guided tour of the facilities by U.S. Army Colonel Marcus Jones, JWC’s Programme Director.

Sponsored by Allied Command Transformation (ACT), the TRIDENT JUPITER 2019 Exercise Campaign consists of two linked multi-level computer-assisted command post exercises (TRIDENT JUPITER 2019-1 and TRIDENT JUPITER 2019-2) directed by the JWC, as well as the one-level (tactical/land-centric) LOYAL LEDA 2020, which will be directed by the Joint Force Training Centre.

TRIDENT JUPITER 2019 Exercise Campaign will involve multiple nations and a wide range of Training Audiences, including the headquarters of the NATO Response Force 2020, Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO), Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum), and Allied Land Command (LANDCOM).

The consecutive exercises are based upon an Article 5 Collective Defence scenario developed by the JWC. Overall, TRIDENT JUPITER 2019 Exercise Campaign will certify NATO Response Force 2020; STRIKFORNATO as a NATO Expanded Task Force, and JFC Brunssum as a Joint Task Force Headquarters.

TRIDENT JUPITER 2019 Exercise Campaign will be directed by Rear Admiral Kaack, who is designated as the Officer Directing the Exercise (ODE).

Subordinate to Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (HQ SACT), the Joint Warfare Centre is the premier collective training establishment of the NATO Alliance at the operational level.

The Centre plans and delivers static/distributed joint operational-level training, while, at the same time, actively supporting concept and doctrine development, the lessons learned process and integration of experimentation into exercises to strengthen NATO’s interoperability, capabilities and operational effectiveness.
