The Royal Netherlands Army Lieutenant General Jan Broeks, Director General of NATO International Military Staff, visited the Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) on Tuesday, 10 April to receive an overview of the Centre and its current activities.

The JWC is the premier training establishment of the NATO Alliance at the operational-level. Established in 2003, the Centre achieved its Full Operational Capability in 2006.

As NATO’s main provider of the Computer-Assisted Command Post Exercises (CAX/CPX), the JWC ensures NATO’s Command and Force Structure headquarters adapt and evolve in the 21st century facing new security challenges. The JWC is also the only NATO organization that creates, maintains and develops synthetic battlespace scenarios used for many National and NATO Joint Force Command certification exercises.

During the visit, Lieutenant General Broeks met with Polish Army Major General Andrzej Reudowicz, Commander JWC, to further enhance the cooperation between NATO’s International Military Staff and the Joint Warfare Centre, and to discuss on potential ways ahead.

Areas of discussion included the Centre’s comprehensive programme of work, its unique support to NATO’s Joint Warfare Development through analysis and doctrine development processes, integration of new concepts, exercises and the Information Environment. The visit concluded with brief overview from the Scenario Branch.

Lieutenant General Broeks took over the position of Director General of the NATO International Military Staff ⁽¹⁾ on 27 July 2016 and will serve a term of three years.

¹ The IMS is the executive body of the NATO Military Committee which is NATO’s senior military authority. The IMS prepares assessments and studies on NATO military issues identifying areas of strategic and operational interest and most importantly, proposes courses of action. The IMS enables the National Military Representatives to deal with military issues rapidly and effectively ensuring that the Military Committee provides the North Atlantic Council consensus based advice on all military aspects of policy, operations, and transformation within the Alliance.
