United Kingdom Air Vice Marshal Bruce H. Hedley MBE MA, Director Joint Warfare, Joint Forces Command, visited NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) on Wednesday, 18 April 2018.
As Director Joint Warfare, Air Vice Marshal Bruce Hedley is responsible for the development, exercising and evaluation of the Joint Force to assure against the current and future threats.
The visit programme included an Office Call with Polish Army Major General Andrzej Reudowicz, Commander JWC, followed by a mission briefing in the Leiv Eiriksson room by Colonel Jan Østbø, JWC's Director of Management, which outlined the Centre’s roles, missions and current Programme of Work (POW) within NATO’s collective training framework.
Here, Air Vice Marshal Bruce Hedley met the JWC staff, hearing from planners about how the Centre conducts exercises and training events for the NATO Command Structure (NCS) and NATO Force Structure (NFS) headquarters.
Topics included JWC’s exercise design and delivery processes and support to Joint Warfare Development by Colonel Neil Wright, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Centre’s Exercise, Training and Innovation Directorate and exercise scenario development by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Derksen, JWC Scenario Branch Head. He also received a briefing on JWC’s state-of-the-art Modeling and Simulation systems.
Air Vice Marshal Bruce Hedley then presented a review of UK Joint Forces Command’s current strategies on training and innovation to prepare the Joint Forces for the future.
In the afternoon, following a guided tour of the facilities, Air Vice Marshal Bruce Hedley visited JWC’s media studio where he received a briefing on the Centre's media simulation and training capabilities.
Air Vice Marshal Hedley was appointed as Director Joint Warfare in 2016. The Joint Forces Command is part of the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence.
Air Vice Marshal Hedley said of his visit:
"Many thanks for a quite stimulating visit where we were able to compare notes on how to optimize training. We agree this is a great challenge to have and we need to get it right."
