Warfare Development: Making NATO Better — Now and Tomorrow

Warfare development at the Joint Warfare Centre (JWC) is defined as “all the actions taken to educate, train, and develop NATO commanders and staff, whilst implementing doctrine, facilitating experimentation, and highlighting lessons learned”.

From its inception, the JWC was organized to ensure that conceptual developments and new doctrines were tested and validated throughout the exercise process. Indeed, training and warfare development are inextricably linked to the transformational role the JWC has within NATO.

Delivering Warfare Development

  • Experimentation and doctrine integration
  • Wargame design capability
  • Continuous collaborative approach
    • Operational planning workshop
    • Enhanced decision making workshop
  • Resilience in operational level exercises
  • Lessons for the Alliance from operational level exercises

The JWC’s world-class exercises are renowned for their realism, providing the perfect platform for testing new concepts and ideas, and for implementing new doctrines at the operational level of war.

Serving as a hub for warfare development, the JWC ensures adherence to joint operational doctrine and standards, fosters experimentation, and supports the implementation of NATO’s Lessons Learned process.

By driving experimentation and exposing new concepts, the Joint Warfare Centre acts as a catalyst for innovation, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical doctrine and practical application.
